The resourceful and community-minded scouts of Crestview’s Troop 30G recently put a unique and inspiring spin on Halloween festivities! Instead of the traditional candy handout, these young women participated in Florala, Alabama’s Halloween Town event, offering children the treat of a brand-new book. This thoughtful initiative was undertaken as part of their efforts to earn the Reading Merit Badge, demonstrating their commitment to promoting literacy within their wider community.

In the spirit of the spooky season, Troop 30G set up a welcoming booth at Halloween Town, but instead of bowls overflowing with sugary delights, they presented tables stacked with a diverse collection of books for children of all ages. The delighted squeals and eager hands reaching for stories offered a heartwarming alternative to the usual Halloween haul, showcasing the power and joy of reading.

This creative approach to Halloween was directly linked to the requirements for the Reading Merit Badge, a badge designed to encourage scouts to explore the world of literature and understand the importance of literacy. To earn this badge, the members of Troop 30G embarked on a journey that involved several key steps, many of which were facilitated by the wonderful resources of the Florala Public Library:

  • Reading a Variety of Books: Scouts were required to read books from different genres, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. This encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones and explore diverse literary styles and subject matter.
  • Discussing the Books They Read: Simply reading isn’t enough; the badge emphasizes comprehension and critical thinking. The scouts engaged in discussions about the books they read, sharing their thoughts, analyzing themes, and understanding the authors’ messages. The Florala Public Library likely provided a welcoming space for these discussions.
  • Visiting a Library and Learning About Its Resources: Understanding the role of libraries in a community is a crucial aspect of promoting literacy. The scouts visited the Florala Public Library, learning about its various resources, services, and how libraries contribute to lifelong learning.
  • Writing Book Reviews or Reports: To solidify their understanding and share their insights, the scouts likely wrote reviews or reports on some of the books they read, honing their writing and analytical skills.
  • Participating in a Project to Promote Reading: This is where their innovative idea for Halloween Town came into play! By giving away books instead of candy, Troop 30G actively promoted literacy within the Florala community, sharing their love of reading with younger children and encouraging them to discover the magic of books.

This initiative by Troop 30G beautifully illustrates the multifaceted benefits of the Scouting America program. It encourages community engagement, fosters a love of learning, and empowers young people to make a positive impact. By choosing to promote literacy during a popular community event, these scouts demonstrated creativity, thoughtfulness, and a genuine commitment to the principles of the Reading Merit Badge.

The happy faces of the children receiving books at Halloween Town served as a powerful reminder of the joy and opportunity that reading can unlock. Troop 30G’s inspiring efforts in Florala highlight the importance of literacy in building strong communities and the positive role that young people can play in fostering a love of reading in others. It’s a fantastic example of how scouts can turn a traditional event into a meaningful opportunity for learning and giving back, one book at a time.

Camporees hold a special place in the history of scouting. These district-wide gatherings bring troops together for a weekend of friendly competition, skill-building, and camaraderie. Rooted in the earliest days of the Boy Scouts, Camporees provide a dynamic platform for scouts to test their abilities in a variety of challenges, share knowledge, and learn from one another. They foster a spirit of teamwork and healthy rivalry, all while reinforcing the core values of the scouting movement.

The Choctaw District Camporee this October was no exception, offering a packed schedule of engaging activities. The scouts from Troop 30B and 30G eagerly dove into the challenges, showcasing their dedication and preparedness. The fire-making competition was a highlight, testing their ability to quickly and efficiently build a sustainable flame using limited resources. Brainpower was put to the test in the trivia challenge, where scouts demonstrated their knowledge of scouting lore, history, and general facts. Dexterity and knot-tying skills were on full display as teams raced against the clock to correctly tie various essential knots. Finally, the obstacle course provided a physical challenge, requiring teamwork and agility as scouts navigated a series of hurdles and tasks.
