Spanish Trail Scout Reservation in DeFuniak Springs recently played host to a thrilling week of adventure as the scouts from Crestview’s Troop 30B (boys) and Troop 30G (girls) immersed themselves in a captivating Medieval-themed Winter Camp. For over sixty years, Spanish Trail has stood as a treasured cornerstone of the local community, providing an invaluable space for scouts to connect with nature, learn essential skills, and forge lifelong memories – and this year’s Winter Camp was no exception!

Stepping onto the sprawling grounds of Spanish Trail is like entering a haven dedicated to the spirit of scouting. With its rich history stretching back more than six decades, the reservation has welcomed countless young people, offering them a safe and inspiring environment to grow, explore, and discover their potential. The towering pines, serene lake, and well-maintained facilities create an idyllic backdrop for outdoor learning and adventure, making it a truly special place for scouts in the Florida panhandle and beyond. Year after year, troops return to Spanish Trail, drawn by its exceptional programs, dedicated staff, and the enduring magic of the scouting experience it provides.

Scouts made a medieval themed gateway for the entrance to their camp.

This year’s Medieval theme transformed the camp into a vibrant kingdom, with scouts embracing the spirit of knights and chivalry. Troop 30B and 30G dove headfirst into the festivities, participating in thrilling competitions that tested their skills and teamwork. Axes flew with satisfying thuds at the throwing range, and scout-powered jousting devices clashed in friendly but fierce contests of balance and coordination. The spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition filled the air, creating an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Beyond the themed fun, Winter Camp at Spanish Trail is also a fantastic opportunity for scouts to expand their knowledge and earn merit badges. The scouts from Crestview eagerly participated in a diverse range of offerings, each providing unique learning experiences:

• Shotgun Shooting: Scouts learned the fundamentals of safe shotgun handling, proper shooting techniques, and firearm safety. They gained practical experience on the range, developing their accuracy and responsible gun ownership skills.
• Riflery: Similar to shotgun shooting, this badge focused on the safe and accurate use of rifles. Scouts learned about different types of rifles, aiming techniques, and the importance of range safety protocols.
• Chemistry: Delving into the fascinating world of matter and its properties, scouts conducted experiments, learned about chemical reactions, and explored the fundamental principles of chemistry in a hands-on and engaging way.
• Composite Materials: This badge introduced scouts to the exciting field of composite materials, exploring their properties, manufacturing processes, and diverse applications in modern technology. They even got to create their own composite samples by making their own knight helmets!
• Disc Golf: Combining outdoor recreation with skill and strategy, scouts learned the rules and techniques of disc golf, navigating a course and honing their throwing accuracy and disc selection.
• First Aid: A crucial and potentially life-saving badge, First Aid equipped scouts with the knowledge and skills to recognize and treat common injuries and illnesses. They practiced bandaging, CPR, and other essential emergency response techniques.
• Physical Fitness: Emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle, this badge involved scouts participating in various physical activities, learning about nutrition, and developing a personal fitness plan to promote lifelong well-being.
• Search and Rescue: This demanding badge taught scouts essential skills for locating and assisting lost or injured individuals in outdoor environments. They learned about search techniques, signaling methods, and teamwork in emergency situations.
• Mining in Society: Exploring the vital role of mining in our modern world, scouts learned about different mining processes, the environmental and economic impacts of mining, and the importance of responsible resource management.

The festive spirit was in full swing recently as the scouts of Crestview’s Troop 30B and 30G traded their compasses and camping gear for wrapping paper and candy canes at their annual Christmas party! This much-anticipated event brought the troops together for an evening of laughter, games, and the delightfully chaotic tradition of Dirty Santa.

Forget silent nights – this Christmas party was filled with joyful noise and friendly competition as the patrols engaged in a series of hilariously fast-paced games that perfectly captured the playful energy of the holiday season. One memorable challenge saw scouts scrambling to wrap each other up entirely in wrapping paper, transforming their teammates into oversized, crinkly Christmas presents. The room erupted in laughter as lopsided packages wobbled around, tape flying and wrapping paper trailing.

The creative chaos continued with another side-splitting game: turning a fellow scout into a “snowman” using rolls of toilet paper. Patrols raced against the clock, carefully (or not so carefully!) draping and layering the tissue to create their frosty masterpieces. The results were wonderfully whimsical, with scouts adorned in fluffy white, resembling everything from traditional snowmen to slightly lopsided abominable snow-beings.

Adding a touch of sweet silliness to the mix, the scouts tackled a candy cane relay race. With candy canes held firmly in their mouths, they had to carefully transfer candy loops from one container to another. This proved to be a test of dexterity, patience (or lack thereof!), and facial muscle control, resulting in plenty of dropped loops and even more laughter.

For many scouts, the highlight of the evening was the much-loved (and often slightly mischievous) game of Dirty Santa. The air crackled with anticipation as wrapped gifts were exchanged, stolen, and strategically pilfered. For several scouts, this was their very first experience with the game, and they quickly caught on to the fun and the art of the gift grab! The surprised expressions, strategic swaps, and occasional groans of good-natured disappointment added a layer of playful intrigue to the festivities.

The resounding sentiment among the scouts was clear: this Christmas party was a resounding success! Several enthusiastically declared it their favorite holiday event of the season, a testament to the fun, friendship, and festive atmosphere that permeated the evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for the scouts to relax, connect with their fellow troop members outside of regular meetings and campouts, and simply enjoy the spirit of the holidays together.

This festive gathering underscores the well-rounded nature of the Scouting America program. While it emphasizes outdoor skills, leadership development, and community service, it also recognizes the importance of fun, fellowship, and creating positive social experiences for its members. The Crestview scouts of Troop 30B and 30G proved that they can navigate a challenging orienteering course with skill and also embrace the lighthearted joy of a Christmas celebration with equal enthusiasm. These moments of shared laughter and festive fun strengthen the bonds within the troops and create lasting memories that enrich the overall scouting experience.
