What started as a small group of enthusiastic young women has blossomed into a vibrant and thriving community, proving the power and importance of scouting opportunities for female teenagers.

Two years ago, the landscape of scouting in Crestview shifted for the better, offering girls the same incredible experiences and pathways to leadership that had long been available to their male counterparts. Troop 30G was born, and in its short history, it has already made a significant impact on the lives of its members.

From conquering challenging hiking trails in the Florida panhandle to mastering essential life skills like first aid and knot tying, the girls of Troop 30G have embraced every adventure with enthusiasm and determination. They’ve learned to work as a team, support each other through challenges, and celebrate each other’s successes. But beyond the fun and camaraderie, something truly remarkable is happening: these young women are building the foundations for a lifetime of leadership, confidence, and unwavering self-esteem.

Behind the Scenes: Troop 30 at Northwest Florida Ballet’s Cinderella

The air at Camp Alaflo recently echoed with the cheers and laughter of Scouting America Troop 30B and Troop 30G’s members as they tackled the challenges of the annual Klondike Derby. Among the enthusiastic participants were the dedicated scouts from Crestview’s own Troop 30B and Troop 30G, who plunged into the winter-themed competition with ingenuity and teamwork.

This year’s derby presented a unique challenge right from the start: each troop had to construct their own Klondike derby sleds without the aid of a single nail or screw! This required creative problem-solving and a deep understanding of lashings and knot tying. The scouts rose to the occasion, showcasing their resourcefulness as they crafted sturdy sleds that would carry their gear and team members throughout the day’s events.

Once their handcrafted sleds were ready, the Crestview scouts embarked on a thrilling circuit of stations, each designed to test different scouting skills and teamwork. They put their pyromania to good use in the fire-making competition, striving to be the first to ignite their tinder and build a sustainable flame. Their knowledge of the natural world was tested at the mushroom identification station, requiring careful observation and accurate recall. Proving that scouting is about more than just outdoor skills, the teams even showcased their lighter side in a lively dancing competition, bringing smiles and energy to the judges.

Beyond the individual station challenges, the Klondike Derby is also a testament to culinary creativity, and the scouts from Crestview proved their prowess in the Dutch oven cooking competition. Their delicious pizza earned them a well-deserved second-place prize, a testament to their teamwork and cooking abilities in the great outdoors.

The success of this event is because of the remarkable effort of the youth-led Venturing Crew 150 from Enterprise, Alabama. This dedicated crew took on the monumental task of planning, organizing, and running the entire Klondike Derby. From designing the challenging stations to managing the logistics and ensuring the smooth flow of the event, Crew 150’s hard work was evident in every detail.

It’s truly inspiring to witness Crew members take on such a significant leadership role. The Klondike Derby requires months of meticulous planning, coordination, and problem-solving – all spearheaded by the young men and women of Crew 150. Their dedication not only provided an unforgettable experience for fellow scouts but also served as a powerful demonstration of their own leadership capabilities, organizational skills, and commitment to the scouting community.

The success of the Klondike Derby at Camp Alaflo is a direct reflection of the passion and dedication of Crew 150. Their ability to create such an engaging and well-run event is a testament to the strength of the Scouting America program in fostering youth leadership. The picturesque trails of Spanish Trail Scout Reservation in DeFuniak Springs, Florida  recently played host to an engaging and skill-building adventure for the scouts of Crestview’s Troop 30B and 30G: tackling the camp’s well-designed orienteering course! Surrounded by the natural splendor and rich history of this cherished scouting haven, the scouts put their navigational prowess to the test, honing skills that will guide them far beyond the woods.

For over six decades, Spanish Trail Scout Reservation has stood as a beacon for scouting in the Florida panhandle. Its sprawling landscape, characterized by rolling hills, dense pine forests, and tranquil waterways, provides an ideal setting for a wide array of outdoor activities. Generations of scouts have forged lasting memories and developed essential life skills within its welcoming embrace. The camp’s commitment to providing quality programs and fostering a love for the outdoors makes it a truly special place for learning and adventure, steeped in the tradition of scouting excellence.

The orienteering course at Spanish Trail offers a fantastic opportunity for scouts to master the art of navigation using a map and compass in a safe and challenging environment. The diverse terrain, clearly marked checkpoints, and varying levels of difficulty make it an ideal location for scouts of all experience levels to learn and grow their skills.

As the Crestview scouts navigated the course, they put into practice a range of valuable skills that extend far beyond the realm of outdoor exploration:

• Map Reading and Interpretation: Scouts had to carefully study the topographic maps provided, deciphering symbols, understanding contour lines to visualize the terrain, and identifying key landmarks to plan their routes effectively. This ability to interpret visual information is crucial in many real-life situations, from understanding directions to analyzing complex data.
• Compass Skills and Bearing Taking: Accurately using a compass to determine bearings and follow a specific direction is fundamental to orienteering. The scouts practiced taking precise bearings and following them through varied terrain, developing a strong sense of direction and the ability to stay oriented in unfamiliar environments.
• Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Orienteering often presents navigational challenges. Scouts had to make decisions about the best routes to take, troubleshoot when they went off course, and adapt their plans based on the terrain and their progress. These problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential for navigating academic challenges, workplace dilemmas, and everyday life.
• Spatial Reasoning and Visualization: Successfully completing an orienteering course requires the ability to mentally visualize the relationship between the map and the actual terrain. Scouts strengthened their spatial reasoning skills as they translated two-dimensional map information into a three-dimensional understanding of their surroundings. This skill is beneficial in fields like architecture, engineering, and even simply packing a car efficiently.
• Teamwork and Communication: When navigating in pairs or small groups, as many scouts do, effective communication and collaboration are key. Scouts had to discuss their planned routes, share information about their location, and work together to find the checkpoints efficiently.
• Observation Skills: Paying close attention to the surrounding environment – identifying distinctive trees, rock formations, or changes in elevation – is crucial for staying on track and confirming their location. Orienteering hones these observation skills, making scouts more aware of their surroundings in all aspects of life.
• Resilience and Perseverance: Not every route goes perfectly! Scouts likely encountered moments of uncertainty or had to backtrack. Learning to stay calm, re-evaluate their position, and persevere until they reached the next checkpoint builds resilience and the understanding that challenges can be overcome with effort and determination.

Renaissance Fairs are fantastic living history events, and the Pensacola (or Gulf Coast/Jubilee) Fair offers a particularly rich tapestry of activities that truly transport visitors to the 16th century, or a fantastical version of it! For scouts, a fair like this is a treasure trove of hands-on learning and entertainment. Here are some of the types of activities Troop 30 members enjoyed:

• Witnessing the Spectacle: The fairgrounds are abuzz with thrilling performances. Scouts could have cheered on jousting knights in full armor, watched daring swordfighters demonstrate their skills, or been captivated by the antics of jesters, jugglers, and firebreathers. Musical minstrels fill the air with period tunes, and stilt walkers add to the vibrant atmosphere.
• Hands-On History and Crafts: Beyond the shows, the fair is a hub of traditional craftsmanship. Scouts observed forging demonstrations and witnessed woodworking and weaving and gained an appreciation for the skills essential to daily life centuries ago. 
• Cultural Immersion: Simply walking through the fair, surrounded by costumed performers and vendors, provides a unique cultural immersion. Scouts can interact with characters, learn about historical manners, and absorb the sights and sounds of a bygone era. Scouts enjoyed planning their outfits and dressing up.

The dedicated scouts of Crestview’s Troop 30B and 30G are not just learning knots and building campfires; they are also deeply committed to a fundamental principle of Scouting America: respecting and protecting the natural world. Recently, these young men and women have been diligently learning and internalizing the Outdoor Code, a guiding set of principles that shapes their actions and instills a sense of responsibility towards our shared outdoor spaces.

The Outdoor Code is more than just a set of rules; it’s a promise that every scout makes to themselves, their fellow scouts, and the environment. It serves as a moral compass, guiding their behavior and ensuring they leave a positive impact wherever their adventures take them.

The Outdoor Code states:

“As an American, I will do my best to—

• Be clean in my outdoor manners.
• Be careful with fire.
• Be considerate in the outdoors.
• Be conservation-minded.”  

Let’s break down what each part of this important code means to the scouts of Troop 30B and 30G:

• “Be clean in my outdoor manners.” This goes beyond simply not littering. It means leaving no trace of their presence. Scouts learn to pack out everything they pack in, properly dispose of waste, minimize their impact on vegetation, and leave campsites cleaner than they found them. This instills a sense of respect for the natural beauty of places like Spanish Trail Park and other outdoor areas in and around Crestview.  
• “Be careful with fire.” Fire is a powerful tool and a vital part of the outdoor experience, but it demands respect and caution. Scouts learn the proper techniques for building, maintaining, and extinguishing campfires safely. They understand the importance of clearing the area, having water readily available, and ensuring the fire is completely out before leaving. This principle is crucial for preventing wildfires and protecting our natural resources.  
• “Be considerate in the outdoors.” This emphasizes the importance of respecting wildlife, other visitors, and private property. Scouts learn to observe animals from a distance, avoid disturbing their habitats, keep noise levels down, and be mindful of others who are also enjoying the outdoors. This fosters a sense of community and ensures that everyone can have a positive experience in nature.  
• “Be conservation-minded.” This principle encourages scouts to actively work towards protecting and preserving our natural resources. They learn about the importance of conservation efforts, respecting plant and animal life, and minimizing their impact on ecosystems. This can translate into actions like participating in park cleanups (as Troop 30G did for Earth Day!), learning about local environmental issues, and advocating for responsible stewardship of the land.  

The importance of the Outdoor Code extends far beyond the individual scout; it has a profound impact on our local communities. When scouts embrace these principles, they become role models for responsible behavior in the outdoors.
