The scouts of Crestview’s Troop 30B and the newly formed Troop 30G recently set sail (or rather, sledded their way!) to Camp Alaflo for an epic Klondike Derby with a fiery twist: the theme was “Training Your Dragon”! Hosted by the ever-enthusiastic Crew 150 from Enterprise, Alabama, the derby saw our Crestview adventurers don their finest Viking attire and dive headfirst into a day of frosty fun and challenging competitions.

This event held extra significance as it marked the very first joint adventure for members of the recently established Troop 30G! The excitement was palpable as the girls joined their Troop 30B counterparts, ready to showcase their scouting spirit and skills alongside their fellow Crestview adventurers.

The creativity was immediately evident as the scouts arrived at Camp Alaflo sporting impressive Viking costumes. From horned helmets and faux fur to braided beards and makeshift weaponry, the troops fully embraced the “Training Your Dragon” theme, adding a fantastic element of imaginative play to the day’s activities.

Crew 150 from Enterprise, Alabama, once again outdid themselves in organizing a truly memorable event. Their dedication to crafting engaging and challenging stations was clear, and their hard work created a fantastic atmosphere for all the participating troops. The “Training Your Dragon” theme was cleverly woven into each competition, adding a whimsical and exciting dimension to the traditional Klondike Derby challenges.

The day was packed with opportunities for the Crestview scouts to test their mettle in a variety of skills:

• Fire Making (Dragon Fire!): Scouts raced against the clock to conjure a sustainable flame, a crucial skill for any Viking facing a chilly dragon’s lair!
• Ax Throwing (Dragon Slaying Practice!): Aim and precision were key as the scouts took their turns sending axes flying towards the target, honing their accuracy for potential dragon encounters.
• First Aid for Dragon Burns: This unique twist on traditional first aid tested the scouts’ knowledge of treating injuries, with a fun, fantastical element of caring for mythical dragon-related ailments.
• Knot Tying (Securing Your Dragon!): Essential scouting knots were put to the test, perhaps imagined as crucial for safely handling and training their newfound dragon companions.
• Skills of Strength and Knowledge (Viking Trials!): Various challenges tested the scouts’ physical prowess and their knowledge of scouting lore and outdoor skills.

Adding a delicious element to the day, the scouts also participated in a Dutch oven cook-off. While the official results are yet to be tallied, the Crestview scouts undoubtedly whipped up some hearty and flavorful dishes fit for any Viking feast!

This Klondike Derby at Camp Alaflo, expertly hosted by Crew 150, provided a wonderful opportunity for the Crestview scouts to not only hone their skills and have a blast but also to strengthen their bonds as a larger scouting community. The successful participation of Troop 30G in their first event alongside Troop 30B marks an exciting new chapter for scouting in Crestview.
